Understand cascading pricing rules

Set shared Brand and Product line defaults while preserving Item overrides.

Draft article for local review. Instructions may change before release.

Retail markup and excise rules inherit through three levels within a supplier profile at a location:

Brand → optional Product line → Item

The most specific explicitly set value wins. The same rule is used for all package forms of the item; packages can have their own discounts.

Example

Suppose the selected supplier profile has these retail markup settings:

LevelSetting
Brand50%
Product lineBlank, so it inherits
Item ABlank, so it inherits
Item B40%

Item A uses 50%. Item B uses its own 40% override.

If you change the Brand rule to 60%, Item A uses 60%. Item B continues to use 40%. Another location or another supplier profile is unaffected.

Blank and zero mean different things

  • Blank markup leaves the next broader markup in effect.
  • Blank excise partner means zero when the other excise field in that row is set. Clear both excise fields to use the next broader pair.
  • 0 is an explicit override. It prevents an inherited positive amount from being used for that component.

For an existing override, choose Clear value, or clear its value, then save. Clearing an override does not erase its earlier history.

Excise fields are a pair

Fixed excise and percentage excise always come from the same row. The most specific row containing either value wins; its blank partner counts as zero.

For example, Brand has $0.29 excise per stick and 5% excise. Product line has 7% and leaves dollars blank. The item uses $0.00 plus 7%, with no $0.29 from Brand. An explicit zero also selects its row.

Retail markup resolves independently. A Brand retail markup can apply with a Product line excise pair.

The location/category inclusion switch controls whether any resolved excise is added. When it is off, no excise is added at any calculation step, regardless of the saved rules.

Change a rule

  1. Open an item and choose Edit pricing.
  2. Check the selected supplier.
  3. Find the Brand, Product line or Item row you intend to change.
  4. Enter the retail markup or excise value, or clear the override to inherit.
  5. Check the bold, outlined fields and the live per-unit price breakdown before package discounts. The preview uses unsaved edits without changing inventory or the active supplier.
  6. Choose Save pricing.

A Brand or Product line change applies to other matching items at that location using that supplier profile. It does not copy the new value into their Item fields, so their own overrides remain distinct.

What is outside the cascade

Sales tax is configured once per location. Category settings control excise inclusion only. Packages have discounts, counts and identifiers, but no separate markup or excise override. MSRP is a reference amount.
